Childhood Diwali Memories We Can Never Forget

There’s no denying that Diwali is the most awaited festival in our country. While a typical Diwali equals to diyas, fireworks, lakshmi puja and great food and sweets, it meant all this and so much more when we were young. And no matter how grown up or successful you are, your childhood Diwali will always be special. So go on read this story and take a trip down memory lane.

    1. Diwali started by pestering dad to buy us firecrackers by the kilo!

See, back in the days, the awareness about evils of firecrackers was not much. All we cared about were phuljhadis, anaars, chakris, and rockets. Pollution. What pollution?

    2. And of course, we got the long lecture in return on “it means literally burning money, beta!”

    Aditya Narayan
To which we all turned a deaf ear and finally went to our last resort - Mom.

    3. While at school or college, breaking the rules and lighting up firecrackers in the washrooms was a must!

Yes, even if it meant getting caught later on, we did it. Just for the sheer thrill, excitement and the Diwali spirit.

    4. The burning of firecrackers started from chhoti Diwali itself. But it only included the smaller crackers like the Bijli bomb and phoonk bomb.

Because the real deal was saved up for the actual D-Day.

    5. The daytime used to be unbearably boring for us on Diwali.

Imagine relatives coming in and out the whole day! And we had to be all prim and proper in front of them. All this, while counting hours in our head till we got to burn firecrackers.

    6. Lakshmi puja was very important, but not for us!

    Diwali
Our moms had a really tough time keeping us inside the house during the Lakshmi Puja. Because we couldn't wait to get out there and get started with the patakhas.

    7. Finally, meeting our buddies outside the house and pitching in our share of firecrackers was the greatest joy ever!

    Diwali
Yes, and the kids with the most crackers earned bragging rights!

    8. But somewhere we always used to long for the time when we'd be allowed to light up the big bombs, like sutli bomb or aloo bomb.

    Crackers
A little envy, a little fear, and lots of excitement-that's how we watched our elders burning the badass big bombs!

    9. And the rich kids burnt these super expensive firecrackers!

Remember these good, old, and amazing firecrackers called 'parachute'?

    10. If you’d be lucky enough, you would score a second innings at going out and burning firecrackers post dinner.

At the cost of mom being really mad. But this time dad would accompany you, since it had gotten late.

    11. To end the giant festivities, a long row of firecrackers was lit up. One from your house till the colony’s gate.

And every year the price and length of these "ladeez" would keep going up.

    12. Even after Diwali night, there were no withdrawal symptoms for us, because the remaining fireworks would go on till the next few days.

Because we had no option! The remaining lot of crackers just had to be finished!
