An Odisha Scientist Just Won A NASA Award For A Ground-Breaking Technology That Prevents Flat Tyres!

If you have ever driven a car, or sat in one (or just used it as an excuse for being late) - a flat tyre is one of god's cruelest jokes. It's worse than a fender bender, always happens when you are in a hurry and already late on a day when it's either too hot or too rainy.
But now a team headed by Sameer Panda form Odisha have come up with a unique technology to prevent tyre burst and the accidents they can cause.
Indian Bags NASA Award For Puncture Prevention Technology
The PhD student’s innovation which was presented at the NASA Tech Brief in New York bagged an award in the Create the Future Design Contest- 2015. It was also recognised as one of the top ten entries in the contest jointly organised by  by NASA and Society of Automobile Engineers International
The technology named as ‘Mild Run Flat Tyre’ is a multi-chambered tubeless tire with sealant inside the chamber to take care of puncture in tread and sidewall. The innovators say their product has improved on the traditional drawback of tyres like leakage, deterioration of sealant due to interaction with air, problem in wheel balancing, rubber hardening, clogging near the valve etc.
It is estimated that if this technology is used in 10 million vehicles, carbon emission due to tyre replacement can be reduced up to 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Some 3,371 deaths and 9,081 injuries were reported in India in 2014 due to tyre burst related incidents. Globally, 1.25 million injuries and casualties are estimated to occur due to tyre bursts.
