According to a study presented at the Paediatric Academic Societies (PAS) annual meeting, more than one third of babies under the age of one are playing with smartphones/tablets and by their first birthday, one in seven toddlers is using the device for atleast an hour a day.
By the time they reached the age of 2, a majority of kids were using smartphones or tablets.
The American Academy of Pediatrics frowns upon any screen time for children under the age of 2, so it’s easy to understand where the concern is coming from. This survey reveals that there’s good reason to study the issue further and assess how much time babies are spending on smartphones and what kind of apps or videos they’re using.
Experts warn, however, that the habit could be detrimental to a child’s cognitive development, despite the claims made by cellphone “learning apps”.
