19 Famous Places That Were Complete Let-Downs When They Were Actually Visited

Sometimes a place has so much written and said about it that you have to see it to believe it. Glossy pictures and brochures hide the real shady pictures of said place, thus luring tourists to visit it. However, the reality is something else entirely. We realised a lot of places are flawed when redditors let us know the most disappointing places they had travelled to. Some will definitely surprise you!

    1. Naples, Italy

    Naples
"The city had piles of trash on the streets." - GuluOne
"In the city of Naples and the surrounding countryside of Campania, Italy, the Mafia has controlled the waste-management industry for decades - dumping and burning trash across its rolling hills and vineyards. In 1994, the European Union declared the situation an official environmental emergency, and things have only gotten worse since then." - Azertys

    2. Hollywood Walk of Fame, Los Angeles

"I just didn't expect the contrast of homeless people sleeping next to stars on the 'Walk of Fame'." - EasyTigrr

    3. Andorra

"Looking back, I think I basically just visited the outlet mall of Europe." -breerocks

    4. Male, Maldives

    maldives
"Male, capital of the Maldives. What a **** hole. The rest of the Maldives was incredible." - I_Nickd_it

    5. Fiji

    fiji
"Everyone goes to the tourist resorts which are on nice islands. The capital is an absolute dump." - Hail_Bokonon

    6. Sentosa Beach, Singapore

    sentosa
"Sentosa beach in Singapore. So messed up. It's all fancy and hyper-developed and connected to one of the largest malls on earth (Vivo Mall), but you get to the beach via monorail and you get to the little sand that's not built up in to stores... and then you look out to the ocean and all you see is oil tankers and factories spewing smoke on the horizon. It was like some sort of futuristic dystopia." -magnora4

    7. Casablanca, Morocco

    casablanca
"The least-interesting place in a fascinating country. Really, Casablanca is just a dumpy business district on the coast. Other than one obscenely expensive mosque that the previous king had built, there's really nothing to see." - Matthattan

    8. Leaning Tower of Pisa

    Pisa
"It is so tiny compared to what you would have expected from pictures. The buildings around it are a lot nicer. It is overall very lame." - happypants69

    9. Stonehenge, UK

    stonehenge
"It's smaller than you think, you can't get close to it, and it's hours from London (which wouldn't matter if it was worth it)." - StallinWasAJerk

    10. Pompeii, Italy

    pompeii
"Pompeii is lame and very crowded with tourists. All of the great mosaics have been taken by museums. If you want to go somewhere much better preserved, much more interesting, and way less crowded, check out the nearby ruins of Herculaneum." - Ecuadorable

    11. Gibraltar

    Gibraltar
"It really is just a big rock and not the country it technically claims to be...You can see everything Gibraltar has to offer in a few hours. We were stuck there for a week." - Noneerror

    13. Athens, Greece

    restoration
"Expected the birthplace of a great civilization. Received slums and scaffolding." - Kuba_Khan

    14. Jamaica

    boy
"Most people are friendly but the vast majority expect exorbitant "tips" for doing next to nothing at all. If you denied them a tip they immediately treated you like shit. If you did tip a reasonable amount they treated you like s**t. Often would look at the cash they were handed as if to say "that's it?" They're very in your face about tipping too and expect money for everything. First day on the island my wife and I walked to the restaurant we had reservations at. I already knew where it was. A random Jamaican walked beside us pointing out parts of the town saying things like, "that's a barbershop, there's the grocery store, over here is the liquor mart" shit that was already on the signs or we didn't care about. After finding out where we were going he acted like he was taking us there. Even called ahead to make sure there was a table. Even though I told him we already had a table. Relentless and annoying. He sat at the bar while we at. Staring. Waiting. When we left he continued to follow us back to the hotel to make sure we got there. As if I could get lost walking 3 blocks and taking one right turn. When we finally were rid of him he looked at me and said "man where's my tip ? How come you forget about me?" Gave him a dollar to make him go away and he told me to f**k off. He was all smiles and pretend niceties until then.
This was repeated with pretty much every second local Jamaican we ran into...except the taxi drivers. The taxi drivers were awesome and didn't demand tipping. If they got it they were happy. If they didn't they were happy too. All in all though the place is full of tourist traps that aren't really my cup of tea. Even the Duns River falls thing is faked. It's not a real landmark at all. It's an artificial set of Rapids.
If you like staying in an all inclusive wallowing on a beach doing nothing but laying about maybe Jamaica is for you. If you're looking for exploration of nature and culture you'll be sorely disappointed." -aussydog

    15. Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA

    rushmore
"You drive up into the South Dakota mountains to see it, come to this enormous visitor's center, then the 'viewing deck' is outside, you look up, and way in the distance is this tiny set of heads. It's hard to say if it's much smaller than the photos make it seem, or if the viewing deck is an absurdly long distance away, but the impression is vastly underwhelming." -ratbastid

    16. Daytona Beach, USA

    daytona beach
"Friends somehow convinced me to go a few years ago. Never again will I enter that city of my own free will. There is literally nothing to do there, aside from going to the dilapidated beach and eating at Joe's Crab Shack." - danecdote

    17. Istanbul, Turkey

    istanbul
"I will say Istanbul only because I wasn't able to enjoy it because of being harassed. I'm a girl and felt very uncomfortable walking around. I was constantly harassed and could barely walk through the grand bazaar without being touched or followed. The city itself though and the history is amazing, I just wish I could've enjoyed it more." - KittyKat1986

    18. Las Vegas, Nevada

    las vegas
"I've been twice and while it can be fun, it's really not worth it. The streets are filthy, there are homeless people every twenty or so feet begging, and since you can get alcohol for free people get really drunk and start fights everywhere." - Mos_definitely
