This is going to make you nostalgic. The decades prior to the 60s were considerably different from the times we are living in today. Take a look at 16 pictures of India's past juxtaposed with her present!
1. St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral, Bangalore, in 1900
Present day
Founded in 1851, the cathedral still looks as majestic. Interestingly, two new domes of this cathedral were inaugurated in 2009.
2. Haridwar Railway Station in 1938
Present day
Did you know Haridwar was called Hardwar in the 30s?
3. Jaisalmer Fort in the 60s
Present day
Some structures always look splendid. The only major difference in fort then and now is that camels have been replaced by cars!
4. Old Market, Leh, in the 30s
Present day
The old school charm of the first picture is nowhere to be seen in the second one. Crowds have taken over the serenity of simpler times.
5. Jama Masjid, Delhi, in the 50's
Present day
If anything, only the number of devotees has increased. Both pictures perfectly capture the strong faith of people.
6. Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar, in 1951
Present day
The Jallianwala Bagh massacre was one of the most horrific chapters in our history. It remained untouched for a long time until finally, a memorial was made in 1951.
7. Pushkar Lake, Ajmer, in the 30s
Present day
The area surrounding the lake has become dirty with pilgrims littering. Sadly, this is the state of most sacred lakes in India.
8. Aurangzeb's Mosque, Varanasi, in the 40s
Present day
The mosque was initially made up of 71 m high minarets, two of which collapsed during the 1948 floods.
9. A petrol pump in 1910
And now
10. Rajabai Clock Tower, Mumbai
Present day
Many concrete buildings have been constructed around the Fort area in Mumbai, but we're glad that the charm of South Bombay around Rajabai Clock Tower is pretty much intact.
11. Kalaghoda, Mumbai, in the 40s
Present day
The only thing that's changed? More people and more cars.
12. Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar, in the 30s
Present day
The Ganges continues to grow dirtier everyday, but that doesn't stop people from bathing in it. Some things never change!
13. Sis Ganj Gurudwara, Delhi, in the 50s
Present day
It's unbelievable that the heart of Chandni Chowk could ever be that isolated. Today, the road opposite the Gurudwara is full of vehicles and street vendors!
14. National Defense Academy, Pune, in the 50s
Present day
An airplane parked outside and more greenery, we love such aesthetic changes, don't we?
15. All India Radio, Delhi, in the 50s
Present day
This building has only become better with time, and so has the number of stations!
16. Female cops in Travancore in the 40s
Present day
From a uniform with skirts to one with trousers, the force looks way different now. It's a pleasure to know that women were employed in the police force from back then!
