Sure they’re living the high life, but they also had to battle some major lows. Mental illnessknows no bias—it can happen to the most popular person of this world as it can happen to someone who lives on the street. That said, many people suffering from mental illness don’t even talk about it, let alone seek treatment for it—mostly due to the fear of rejection and being misunderstood.
These celebrities, however, are here to take a stand and bring about some change. They have openly spoken about their struggles with mental health issues, have sought treatment and now want to inspire others to help find courage.
Get inspired.
1) Leonardo DiCaprio
Suffered From- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
"I remember my makeup artist and assistant walking me to the set (of 'The Aviator') and going, ‘Oh God, we’re going to need 10 minutes to get him there because he has to walk back and step on that thing, touch the door and walk in and out again."
2) Brad Pitt
Suffered From- Depression
“I used to deal with depression, but I don't now, not this decade—maybe last decade. But, that's also figuring out who you are. I see it as a great education, as one of the seasons or a semester. This semester I was majoring in depression. I was doing the same thing every night and numbing myself to sleep, the same routine. Couldn't wait to get home and hide out.”
3) Jim Carrey
Suffered From- Depression
“I was on Prozac for a long time. It may have helped me out of a jam for a little bit, but people stay on it forever. I had to get off at a certain point because I realised that, you know, everything's just okay.”
4) Adam Levine
Suffered From- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
"When I was first diagnosed with ADHD, it wasn’t a surprise because I had difficulty in high school focusing. And I think now, people notice my ADHD as an adult on a daily basis. When I can’t pay attention, I really can’t pay attention."
5) John Hamm
Suffered From- Depression
"And honestly Antidepressants help! If you can change your brain chemistry enough to think, 'I want to get up in the morning; I don't want to sleep until four in the afternoon. I want to get up and go do my sh*t and go to work and ...' Reset the auto-meter, kick-start the engine!"
6) David Beckham
Suffered From- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
"I’ll go into a hotel room. Before I can relax I have to move all the leaflets and all the books and put them in a drawer. Everything has to be perfect."
7) Angelina Jolie
Suffered From- Depression
“I felt I was going into very dark place, and I wasn’t capable of getting up in the morning, so I signed up for something that forced me to be active.”
8) Deepika Padukone
Suffered From- Depression
“'It all started on February 15 last year. I'd won all my awards and all the appreciation for 2013 and everything had happened. It was a great time. But I woke up one morning, just feeling empty. I woke up feeling directionless. I didn't know where to go. I didn’t know what to do. The biggest step for me was to accept what my counsellor was telling me.”
9) Beyonce
Suffered From- Depression
“Now that I was famous, I was afraid I’d never find somebody again to love me for me. I was afraid of making new friends. Then one day my mom said, ‘Why do you think a person wouldn’t love you? Don’t you know how smart and sweet and beautiful you are?’ That’s when I decided I only have two choices: I can give up, or I can go on.”
10) Elton John
Suffered From- Bulimia
"As soon as I said ['I need help'], I knew that I was going to get better, and I was determined to get better. But it was just a relief to be able to say those."
11) Jared Padalecki
Suffered From- Depression
"It kind of hit me like a sack of bricks. I mean, I was 25 years old. I had my own TV show. I had dogs that I loved and tons of friends, and I was getting adoration from fans and I was happy with my work, but I couldn’t figure out what it was; it doesn’t always make sense is my point. It’s not just people who can’t find a job or can’t fit in society that struggle with depression sometimes."
12) J.K. Rowling
Suffered From- Depression
“I have never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never. What's to be ashamed of? I went through a really rough time and I am quite proud that I got out of that.”
13) Ellen DeGeneres
Suffered From- Depression
“Everything that I ever feared happened to me. I lost my show. I’ve been attacked like hell. I went from making a lot of money on a sitcom to making no money. When I walked out of that studio after working so hard, knowing that I had been treated disrespectfully for no reason other than I was gay, I just went into this deep, deep depression.”
14) Miley Cyrus
Suffered From- Depression
“So many people looked at (my depression) as me being ungrateful, but that is not it- I (couldn’t) help it. There’s not much that I’m closed off about, and the universe gave me all that so I could help people feel like they don’t have to be something they’re not or feel like they have to fake being happy. There’s nothing worse than being fake happy.”
Help break the stigma people! Don’t suffer in silent and talk about it. There’s nothing to be ashamed of…
